Current Generations & Variants
The latest generation (G80/G81) is available in several high-performance configurations:
- M3 Sedan (G80): The core high-performance sedan featuring a 3.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo inline-6 engine, producing 473 hp in its standard manual form.
- M3 Competition Sedan: Offers increased output, typically 503 hp to 523 hp in newer models, and comes with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission.
- M3 Competition with M xDrive: Adds BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, allowing for a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) sprint in as little as 3.5 seconds.
- M3 Touring (G81): The first-ever official production wagon version, combining the performance of the M3 with the practicality of a 500-liter boot.
- M3 CS (Competition Sport): A limited-run, track-focused version with more power (up to 543 hp/550 hp) and extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber.

Legacy Generations
The M3 has evolved through several iconic engine configurations over the decades:
- E30 (1986–1991): The original 4-cylinder homologation special.
- E36 (1992–1999): Introduced the first inline-6 engine.
- E46 (2000–2006): Widely considered one of the best-handling M3s ever, featuring the high-revving S54 engine.
- E90/E92/E93 (2007–2013): The only generation to feature a high-revving V8 engine.
- F80 (2014–2020): Returned to the inline-6 but added twin-turbochargers for the first time.
